After a week

"Ritvik, what are you doing here?" I asked, my voice barely masking the irritation I felt. Before I could get an answer, he stepped inside, brushing past me.

"Ovi's asleep, don’t make a scene," I whispered, but he didn’t seem to care. He moved past me and headed straight to the living room, collapsing on the couch as if he owned the place. I watched him, torn between anger and confusion.

Suddenly, I heard a soft murmur from behind me. I turned to see Ovi, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "Rittt," she called in her baby voice, reaching out to him. My frustration bubbled up when Ritvik's face lit up at the sight of her.

"Ovi, go back to bed," I said gently, but she had already toddled her way to him, clinging to his leg.

"I want to go to Ritttt's house," she said, struggling to form her words but making her desire clear. Ritvik's eyes softened, and he scooped her up into his arms.

"Okay, sweetheart, we can go to my house," he said without hesitation, making my blood boil.

"No, absolutely not," I snapped, taking a step forward. "She’s not going with you."

Ovi’s lower lip started to tremble, and I knew a tantrum was coming. She began to wail loudly, clinging even tighter to Ritvik. "No, no, I want to go with Ritttt!"

Ritvik shot me a pleading look. "Come on, Rashmi, let her come with me. She misses spending time with me."

"No, Ritvik," I said firmly, crossing my arms. "She needs to stay away from you."

But Ovi’s cries only grew louder, and she began to thrash in his arms, making it harder for him to hold her. Ritvik’s expression softened with concern as he tried to soothe her. "Please, Rashmi. Don’t make her cry like this."

I hesitated, seeing the desperation in his eyes. My frustration was at its peak, but Ovi’s cries tugged at my heart. Finally, with a sigh, I relented. "Fine. But I’m coming too."

Ritvik’s face brightened with relief. "Thank you," he said softly.

We bundled up Ovi, who calmed down as soon as she knew she was going with Ritvik, and drove to his house. As soon as we arrived, Ovi’s face lit up with excitement. She spotted the pool in the backyard and pointed at it eagerly.

"Wate! wate!" she squealed.

"No, Ovi," I said, shaking my head. "

But Ritvik, ever the reckless one, had already started unbuttoning his shirt. He grinned at me, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Oh, come on, it’s just for a little while."

"Ritvik, don’t you dare—" I started, but it was too late. He had already stripped down to his shorts and, before I could stop him, scooped up Ovi and jumped into the pool with her.

My mouth hung open as I watched them splash around, Ovi’s laughter echoing through the backyard. Ritvik’s younger sister, who had been watching from the doorway, burst out laughing and ran over to join them, jumping in with a carefree shout.

I couldn’t help but smile a little as I sat down on a poolside chair, though I kept my distance. Ritvik’s mother appeared with a warm smile, gesturing to a servant to bring refreshments. "Let them have their fun," she said, sitting beside me.

We started talking, making small conversation about work and Ovi’s latest adventures. But my attention kept drifting back to the pool, where Ritvik was now throwing Ovi up in the air, catching her with ease. My heart softened a little, seeing how happy she was, but I quickly pushed the feeling away.

Then, suddenly, Ritvik climbed out of the pool, his wet form dripping water everywhere. He walked over to me with that familiar, playful grin.

"Swan," he said, "I have a request."

I raised an eyebrow, taking a sip of the juice the servant had just handed me. "What is it?"

"Kiss me," he said bluntly, and I choked, almost spitting the juice out. Ritvik’s mother chuckled, clearly amused by her son’s antics. I felt my cheeks burn, and I looked around, desperately trying to avoid his intense gaze.

"Don't trouble her Ritvik" his mother said him but he ignored her.

"You’re insane," I muttered, shaking my head. "If you want a kiss, then… jump in the pool again," I said, waving my hand dismissively, hoping it would make him leave me alone.

To my shock, he didn’t hesitate. "Is that a dare?" he asked, a wicked smile spreading across his face.

"Yes," I said confidently, turning back to his mother and trying to ignore him.

Without warning, he ran to the pool and jumped in again with a loud splash, making everyone laugh. "Done!" he yelled from the water, his eyes shining with triumph.

I rolled my eyes, hoping he would just stay there, but he didn’t. He climbed out of the pool, dripping wet, holding a giggling Ovi in his arms. He marched straight to me, determination in every step.

"Now, where’s my kiss?" he demanded, standing so close that I could feel the cool droplets from his wet skin.

Before I could react, he leaned down and kissed me on the cheek, his lips lingering for just a moment. I froze, my breath catching as he leaned closer, whispering, "The real kiss can wait until we’re alone."

I felt my face flush, my heart beating wildly. Ritvik’s mother just smiled knowingly, while I pretended to look away, trying to regain my composure. I gently pushed him back, embarrassed by the sudden intimacy in front of his family. He just laughed and walked back to the pool with Ovi, leaving me stunned.

I settled back in my chair, taking a long sip of juice to cool down, while Ritvik’s mother handed me a towel. “He’s always been that way, you know,” she said, her voice warm and affectionate.

I nodded, still not sure how I felt about everything. It was always like this with Ritvik—a confusing mix of anger, attraction, and tenderness that I didn’t quite know how to handle. But seeing him with Ovi, happy and carefree, I couldn’t deny that something inside me was starting to change.

Maybe I was beginning to see a side of him that I had tried so hard to ignore. And maybe, just maybe, that terrified me more than anything else.

After our time in the pool, Mom suggested that we stay the night at their house. I saw the hesitation in Rashmi's eyes, and I knew she was about to say no, but then my grandmother joined in with a gentle request. Rashmi couldn’t refuse them both, so with a small nod, she agreed.

Later, Rashmi changed Ovi’s clothes, as she always carried extra outfits for her. Dinner was cozy, with laughter and warmth filling the table. My sister later led Rashmi to the guest room, where she and Ovi would stay for the night.

But as the house quieted down and everyone went to their rooms, I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I decided to check in, and in the stillness of the night, I found myself standing outside her room. The door was slightly ajar, and I carefully pushed it open.

Inside, Rashmi sat on the bed, focused on her laptop. Ovi was fast asleep beside her, tiny and peaceful. Rashmi was so absorbed that she didn’t notice me until I walked up to her and quietly sat down.

Her eyes widened in surprise. “Ritvik! What are you doing here?” she whispered, trying not to wake Ovi.

I smiled, leaning closer. “I wanted to ask you something important.”

She narrowed her eyes, a bit cautious. “And what’s that?”

“When are you going to say yes?” I asked, keeping my tone light but my eyes serious.

She tilted her head, looking confused. “Yes… to what?”

I laughed softly, feeling a bit nervous but determined. “To marrying me, of course.”

Rashmi’s eyes went wide, and she quickly grabbed a pillow and threw it at me. I chuckled, catching her wrist gently. Her expression softened, though she still looked a bit flustered.

“Ritvik, be serious,” she murmured.

“I am serious,” I replied, my tone dropping as I looked straight at her. “Tell me, do you feel anything for me? Anything at all—love, or even hate?”

She looked away, biting her lip before finally meeting my gaze. “It’s not that simple. I don’t hate you, Ritvik. But… I don’t want you to ruin your life for me. You deserve freedom, to live your life without burden or responsibility.”

I shook my head, holding her hand a little tighter. “Rashmi, you’re not a burden. Neither is Ovi. I love you both, and I want to be part of your lives. Isn’t that worth something?”

Her gaze softened, and I felt her hand relax in mine. “Ritvik… I just… I don’t know if I can be the person you need.”

I leaned forward, brushing a gentle kiss on her cheek. “You’re exactly the person I need. Both of you are.” I paused, studying her expression. “And I mean it when I say I’m serious about marriage.”

She took a deep breath, clearly torn. “I just don’t want you to regret this.”

I gave her a reassuring smile. “I won’t. I’ll prove it to you every day if I have to.”

Without another word, I let go of her hand, giving her one last reassuring look before standing up. “Good night, Rashmi.”

As I left the room, I felt a sense of calm. I knew this journey wouldn’t be easy, but I was determined to show her that my love for her and Ovi was real.

This chapter is small but I will make next chapter longer.

Chapter 26

Today was a special day for me. It was my mother’s birthday, and after so many requests, she had finally agreed to visit. She loved her life in the village and always said it was too busy and noisy here, but with the festival season coming up, she wanted to see Ovi. So, here I was, standing at the railway station, waiting eagerly for her.

Ovi was still asleep when I left, so I came alone, holding onto that warmth I always felt at the thought of her. Suddenly, the floor trembled slightly—the familiar rumble of the approaching train. My heart beat faster with excitement as the train pulled in, slowing down before stopping in front of me.

I looked through the crowd, and finally, I saw her stepping down. I rushed forward, touching her feet to seek her blessings. She smiled softly, pulling me into a hug and pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead.

“How is everything, beta?” she asked, her voice full of love.

“Oh, things are going really well, Maa! The boutique is growing steadily,” I replied, feeling proud.

She gave me a smile of approval, a look that always made me feel ten feet tall. “That’s wonderful. And how’s my little Ovi?”

We talked and laughed about old memories as we made our way to the car, sharing stories of my childhood that we both cherished. Before long, we were back at my apartment. As soon as I opened the door, I saw that Ovi was awake, looking around curiously.

Her eyes lit up when she saw my mother, and she reached out her tiny arms. “Nani!” she called in her sweet voice.

My mom immediately knelt down, scooping her up and settling on the couch with her, laughing as Ovi babbled excitedly.

“Oh, how you’ve grown, my little one,” my mother cooed, showering her with kisses. We spent the day like this, laughing, talking, and simply enjoying each other’s company, filling the apartment with warmth and joy.

Evening soon arrived, and I was in the kitchen making tea when I heard the door open. I turned to see Ritvik walking in, carrying a friendly smile but with a hint of curiosity as he spotted my mother.

“Oh, Ritvik, you’re here,” I said, smiling at him.

He nodded, his eyes moving from me to my mother. I quickly introduced them, “Maa, this is Ritvik. He… he’s a friend.”

My mom gave him a nod, looking at him thoughtfully. “A friend, hmm?” she echoed, glancing between the two of us.

But Ritvik, with his usual boldness, shook his head. “No, Aunty, I’m not just a friend.”

My heart skipped a beat as I turned toward him, giving him a pointed look. “Yes, Maa, he’s actually my… junior at work. He’s learning cloth designing,” I quickly said, hoping to divert the conversation.

My mom looked intrigued, her gaze shifting back to Ritvik. “Oh, is that so?” she said, amused.

Ritvik raised an eyebrow, a playful smile tugging at his lips. “Junior, huh? I’m learning a lot from her, that’s for sure,” he replied, his eyes twinkling as he glanced at me.

I shot him a warning look, trying not to smile myself. “Ritvik, why don’t you sit down? I’ll bring the tea,” I said, hoping to shift the conversation.

But he wasn’t done. He turned to my mother and added, “I must say, Aunty, you have raised an amazing daughter. She’s very dedicated… and very caring.”

My mom smiled warmly. “I’m glad to hear that. She’s always been a hardworking girl, even as a child. I’m proud of her,” she said, reaching out to hold my hand.

I felt my cheeks warm at their compliments, but I was grateful for the lighthearted moment. Just then, Ovi climbed off my mother’s lap and went over to Ritvik, tugging at his hand.

“Ritttvik, pick me up!” she said, her voice full of excitement.

He chuckled, lifting her up with ease. “Anything for you, little one,” he said, smiling.

They both joined us on the couch, and we sat, enjoying our tea together. Ritvik kept the conversation going with my mother, sharing stories and keeping things light. As we talked, I saw my mother watching Ritvik with an approving look, clearly impressed by his easygoing nature and the way he doted on Ovi.

Soon, it was time for dinner. I prepared a simple meal, and we all sat together, sharing laughter and more stories. Ritvik, with his usual charm, even managed to get my mother to share some embarrassing tales from my childhood.

“Maa, you don’t have to tell him everything!” I protested, laughing along with them.

“Oh, don’t worry, Rashmi, I’m just getting to know my daughter’s friend,” she teased, giving me a knowing smile.

After dinner, Ritvik finally said his goodbyes, but not before he whispered to me, “I’ll see you soon, junior,” with a wink.

As he left, my mother watched him, a thoughtful expression on her face. When she turned back to me, she was smiling softly.

“Beta, you didn’t tell me your ‘junior’ was such a nice young man,” she said, giving me a look that made my heart skip a beat.

I shrugged, trying to seem casual. “He’s just a friend, Maa. Nothing more.”

But my mother only smiled knowingly, her eyes twinkling as if she understood more than I’d said.
